How often should an AED be checked and maintained?

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) should be checked and maintained regularly to ensure they function correctly during an emergency. At RTS First Aid Supplies we stock HeartSine AEDs, which come with the following recommendations:

  • Visual Inspection: Perform a visual check at least once a month to confirm the device is in good condition, the status indicator shows it’s ready for use, and there’s no visible damage.
  • Battery and Pad-Pak™ Cartridge: HeartSine AEDs use an integrated Pad-Pak™ that combines the battery and electrode pads in one cartridge. Check the expiration date on the Pad-Pak™ and replace it as needed, typically every 4 years, or sooner if used.
  • Self-Check Feature: HeartSine AEDs have an automatic self-check system that runs weekly. Ensure the status indicator shows the device is operational (usually a green light).
  • Post-Use Maintenance: After use, replace the Pad-Pak™ and inspect the device before returning it to service.
  • Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Refer to the HeartSine user manual for specific maintenance and troubleshooting instructions.

Where should my first aid kit be located?

The location of your first aid kit is critical to ensuring it can be accessed quickly during an emergency. Here’s what we recommend:

At Home:

  • Avoid areas prone to moisture or extreme temperatures, like bathrooms or garages.

At Work:

  • Position the kit in a common area, such as a lunch room, reception area, or designated first aid station.
  • In larger workplaces, have multiple kits available throughout the building, especially in high-risk areas like workshops or kitchens.
  • Ensure the kit is clearly marked and easily visible, with signage if needed.
